Joel
began his swing dance career in the summer of 1998 on a
date in Chicago. He learned very quickly from countless
workshops and non-stop dancing and brought his skills to
Cleveland, OH.
Joel
taught swing full-time out in Cleveland, OH for 4 years
(1999-2002) and started Get Hep Swing, LTD. He co-created
the very first All Balboa Weekend with Valerie Salstrom
(June 2001). He moved to San Diego in 2002 with Alison Scola
and started teaching abroad.
Joel continues to travel the globe sharing his love of Swing
dancing.
Joel
has a high quality, energetic approach to the dance that
makes every lesson with him and any partner a blast! As
a regular teacher at major events all over the world, his
down to earth, enthusiastic attitude is contagious. He has
taught all over the US (26 states and counting) as well
as Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Hungary,
Scotland and Sweden.
He
has a full knowledge of various styles from years of study
that he shares in his instruction of Balboa, Lindy, Charleston,
Collegiate Shag, Jazz Movement, and Pre-Swing dances (Texas
Tommy, One Step, etc)
To
'preserve' a dance, you must understand the technique and
characteristic fundamentals of that dance. For a dance to
'evolve', you must be open to everyone adding creative elements
to that dance. Joel encourages students to study and be
open to “differences” so that they can make
the dance their own.
He embodies these qualities in his instruction and dancing
while remembering the true reason we dance - for FUN!

Sosh
Howell
Lindsay
Longstreth
Sosh began Lindy Hopping in 1999 after seeing his mom do six count. As there was no Lindy Hop in Asheville at the time he successfully co-founded the local Lindy Hop scene and continued to pursue his passion by attending Herrang Dance Camp in the summer of 2001; a trend that would continue for the next 6 years. Of the many influences that he experienced while in Herrang such as the Harlem/Rhythm Hot Shot he also had the chance to meet and learn from the late great Frankie Manning. This passion also led Sosh to help create with Micheal and Jaya Gamble the event you may know as Lindy Focus, starring for the first 6 years as a main teacher for the camp. Though he enjoys teaching local and regional classes Sosh has also given classes and workshops in London, France, Sweden. As a performer he also has many accomplishments including first placement at ULHS in 2008 with the dance troupe Hot Rhythm Rising
Lindsay
found the rhythm in her feet in 2002. She has moved from
her hometown of Knoxville, TN since then, but has not
stopped dancing. Teaching since 2005, she is always looking
to deepen her pedagogy of vintage swing. She currently
resides in Atlanta where she joined the team at Down South
Swing in 2008 as an instructor and most recently, Director
of the 'Artist in Residence' series. In her classes she
focuses on quality movement, the mechanics of connection,
physical awareness, and self-expression. She has a martial
arts and modern dance background in addition to swing.
Through her broad exploration of kinetic art forms she
strives to always keep her instruction fresh and sensible.
She has competed and placed at a number of events including
Lindy Focus, AVS, Swingtime in the Rockes, Southern Belle
Swing Bash, and the Team Division of ULHS.
Jason
& Danielle
Knight
Jason
was introduced to Lindy in '05', then he was introduced
to Danielle later that year, which meant Danielle not
only fell for Jason she fell for Lindy Hop too. Jason
and Danielle have delved into many facets of swing and
have their own unique twist to everything they do. Together
they have taught swing dance all around middle and east
Tennessee. Together and individually they have placed
in competitions around the southeast, most recently they
placed first in the Adv. Strictly Lindy at Dance Renaissance.
They now reside in Huntsville, Al, where they can be found
teaching to eager dancers and organizing events for the
scene.
Jered
Ferris
Lauren
Nicholson
Jered
caught his first glimpse of swing at a summer camp in
1998. It looked cool, so he took East Coast lessons in
college and saw a demonstration of Lindy Hop in Nashville.
It looked cooler, so he took lessons in grad school and
saw the Jam Cellar crew in D.C. truly lead&follow.
It's the coolest, so he's been pursuing Lindy Hop and
Charleston ever since.
Jered loves the inherent energy, joy, & musicality
of swing dance and delights in his students experiencing
these elements. He wants his students to grasp the principles
of the dance, the big ideas, not just 'moves,' and to
feel the awesome energy of connection. He specializes
in absurd illustrations and corny jokes to explain the
details of the dance.
Jered has been teaching in Birmingham, AL for the past
4 years.
Lauren
has loved dance as long as she can remember. She dabbled
in latin, cajun and east coast swing before discovering
Lindy Hop at the end of 2007. She was immediately hooked,
and since then has been traveling (as far as Sweden!)
as well as attending classes locally to develop her skills
in Lindy Hop, Charleston and Blues dancing. Like Jered,
she loves the intimate connection of the dance with oneself,
the music and one's partner. She is interested in exploring
and communicating to others the joy and essence of movement
in dance as a form of expression and non-verbal communication.
She has been teaching Lindy hop and Charleston in Birmingham
since June of 2008.
