Red Hot DJ Dance Saturday, March 31st |
||
|
We hope you all join us this Saturday, March 31st for the monthly Red Hot Lindy Hop dj dance. Last month was our record attendance as we hosted out-of-towners for the Int'l Blues Challenge. Keep the feeling going with our dance and a late-night house party afterward at Sarah Beth & Candace's house. Bring a friend, or bring a few, and come dance with us at this great venue, InBalance Fitness, located in the funky Cooper-Young district at 794 S. Cooper St., 38104. A free Charleston lesson is at 7pm. Your favorite RHLH DJs will start at 8pm and keep you moving all night long. Admission is only $5, unless you register for the Charleston workshop that same day with Amanda & Jaredan--then the dance is free! Light refreshments will be provided, and as always, all profits go to Red Hot Lindy Hop, making sure we can continue to bring you quality events. Please come out to support Red Hot and dance at this great new venue, where the floors are smooth, the company is cool, and the beats are swingin'!

| A Message from Miss D'Fe, Queen of Dance Floor Ettiqutte | ||
Dear Miss D'Fe,
I'm interested in learning more about steal jams. It looks like so much fun! Sadly, I am not sure exactly how or when to steal someone. What are the rules and etiquette for joining a steal jam?
Signed,
Striving to Steal (Memphis)
Dear Striving to Steal,
It is wonderful to hear that you are enthusiastic about steal jams! There are a few guidelines before entering the jam circle.
First of all, make sure it is a steal jam and not a regular jam. Often someone will call out "Steal Jam" or just begin stealing.
Second and most important, both Leads and Follows MUST steal politely. There are no limits on being clever and creative with your steals, but you never want to be abrupt, forceful, or rude.
Finally, don't be stingy. There is no harm in making the stealer work for it, but we never want to purposefully or discourteously deny the stealer. This action might also make your partner very uncomfortable.
As always, be conscious of newer dancers and keep your best manners and social graces on the dance floor.
Cherrio and happy dancing ! !
Yours truly,
Miss D'Fe (Miss Dance Floor Etiquette)

The mirror across from the dance floor was so huge, it took the entire length of the floor. I suppose it was a nice touch, but what struck me was the man staring back. He had to be somewhere around me because he was right across from me. His clothes were huge for his frame, and I wondered, "Why is that guy wearing such big clothes?" Then I realized: the guy in the mirror was me. As I stared across the floor into my own eyes, I couldn't help but smile, considering the road I had followed since my doctor threatened me about weight loss. I hated exercise and I hated diet even more, but dancing I could do, dancing I liked. I don't have the space to go into exactly how things changed, and why so quickly, but I can say what changed: my attitude. In the end, there was no argument to get me on a sports field, or a track. I felt too insecure and inadequate. What dancing helped me find was perspective. I found a perspective that told me I am worth a change. I wish I could tell you how it worked, but it just did. I write this having lost close to 40 lbs. I am sure the exercise and the cutback on food helped, but the major thing was the perspective. Dancing helped me see myself the way I can be. |
